2014 Thanksgiving Greeting Card-Last Minute

2014 Thanksgiving Greeting Card-Last Minute

IMG_0034.JPG

Here is the Last Minute Thanksgiving card I made for this year. You will find the art work and instructions to make your own below. This has been the easiest card I have made so far. It also might be my favorite to date.  It is a great activity for kids to do while waiting for their turkey dinner.

You will need the IMAGE PDF and the SAMPLE PUZZLE as well as the items below:

  • Card stock for 5″ x 7″ card base; I used 110lb.  Card stock to print the IMAGE PDF on; I used 80lb.  The cut outs hold up better if they are printed on card stock.
  • Pattern paper for card front, card inside, pumpkin right and left sides, pumpkin center front and back (see below).  Use scraps for the pumpkin, they are small.  I think it looks better if the pumpkin paper is different for the sections.  Every card maker likes things a little different.  🙂
  • Piece of acetate larger than the pumpkin.  You can even use it from cardboard boxes that have the clear plastic windows.  Recycle/Reuse.
  • Scissors.  You may want a blade to cut an X in the center of the pumpkin cut out.
  • Tape and glue or a Xyron X sticker maker and foam or pop dots.
  • Ranger Distress Vintage Photo ink or something similar to edge the images.
  • Pencils, gel pens or markers to color the leaves.  If you use water color pencils, don’t forget the water!  I used a water brush and just wiped it off in between colors.
  • Alcohol marker to color the back of the pumpkin acetate.
  • Zig Wink of Stella clear marker.  If you don’t have one, you really should look into them.
  • A way to curl the leaves, even if you bend them around a pencil.

Vintage Dot-to-Dot Collection – Billy Spots Puzzle Dots

Billy_Spots_puzzle_dots_01

Billy Spots Puzzle Dots is one of the oldest dot-to-dot books in David Kalvitis’s collection. David has spent over 10 years searching for these classic books with over 50 in his collection so far.

Billy_Spots_puzzle_dots_02
Billy Spots Puzzle Dots, 1939 copyright softcover from Platt & Munk. The original (by Henry Altemus Company) was hardcover and printed in 1917. I believe the author is J.L Gallagher as stated in a Google Book search (Catalog of Copyright Entries). His/Her initials are on the covers and a lot of the individual puzzle images. Other puzzle books in our collection with the same initials are Piffle’s Pastime Dot Drawing Book, Piffle’s Mother Goose and Willie Wuzzle’s Picture Puzzles.

Billy_Spots_puzzle_dots_05

This Billy Spots Puzzle Dots book size is 5 7/8″ x 8″, a common size for the decade. The puzzles are only 4″ x 5″ but the illustrations around the dot-to-dots are detailed. Many of the images are not recognizable until solved, just like David’s. This is rare for older dot-to-dot puzzles.
Billy_Spots_puzzle_dots_04Billy Spots Puzzle Dots has the same instructions as the J.L Gallagher books. This version says “The DOT Drawing Books.” However, the original says “The Altemus Drawing Books.” The puzzle book seems to focus on teaching “young artists” at kindergarten aged, even though some of the instructions are built into the story.

2014 International Dot Day – September 15th

2014 International Dot Day – September 15th

International Dot Day

It’s a new year and another addition to the Peter Reynold’s Dot Day Celebration.  I love looking at all the “Dots” people were making around the world.  David Kalvitis's International Dot Day MarkSo many were beyond my creativity.  International Dot Day (every September 15th) is a celebration of creativity that was inspired by Peter H. Reynolds’ book “The Dot”. His Celebri-dots Blog is filled with other authors, illustrators and celebrities who share in the dream of a more creative world. For International Dot Day 2012 David created his first “Mark”. He has continued this wonderful celebration by creating a 2014 “Mark”
Celebrate your individual artistic talents with the rest of the world by making your own dot. Not sure what to do? The International Dot Day Facebook is loaded with “Dot” happenings from around the world and ideas.

Terri's 2014 Dot Day MarkEven I took the time to make my own “mark”.  It is my avatar.  I love this puzzle image and I asked David for permission to use it for all my personal and professional avatars.  There is a story behind this puzzle image.  I love comic books and puzzles.  One year I asked David to create a puzzle that had a woman hero in it.  He had to be careful not to make her look like any other character that was already copyrighted.  She also had to be fully clothed to keep the puzzle family friendly.   I think he did a great job.  Her outfit is very practical.  It was quite an honor to ask for a puzzle and have an author create AND use it in a book!  🙂  Thanks David!  I also scrapbook and make cards.  I cut out the puzzle, pop dotted it on scrap paper and put a die cut circle around it.  It is definitely “me”.  Now…  go make your own dot!

Vintage Dot-to-Dot Collection – Piffle’s Mother Goose

Piffle's Mother Goose Dot Drawing Book

Once upon a time, in a land close to home, a puzzle creator went back into history.  Well not really, but David Kalvitis loves dot-to-dots so much that he had started a collection of vintage and newer connect-the-dot books.  David has spent over 10 years searching for these classic books with over 50 in his collection so far.

Here is one of the older books in the collection: Piffle's initials from the illustrator

Piffle’s Mother Goose Dot Drawing Book, 1939, softcover from Platt & Munk. The original (by Henry Altemus Company) was hardcover and printed in 1920.  We are currently verifying the illustrator.  His/Her initials are on the covers and a lot of the individual puzzle images.  I believe it is J.L Gallagher as stated in a Google Book search (Catalog of Copyright Entries).  Other puzzle books in our collection with the same initials are Piffle’s Pastime Dot Drawing Book, Billy Spots Puzzle Dots and Willie Wuzzle’s Picture Puzzles.

This book is 5 7/8″ x 8″, a common size for the decade.  The puzzles are only 4″ x 5″ but the illustrations around the dot-to-dots are detailed.

Piffle’s Mother Goose has an interesting instruction back cover.  This version says “The DOT Drawing Books.”  However, the original says “The Altemus Drawing Books.”  The puzzle book seems to focus on teaching “young artists” at kindergarten aged.

Unlike modern dot-to-dPiffles_Mother_Goose_1939_03ots, the instruction for each puzzle is found by reading the little poems under each dot-to-dot.  Below the instruction is the Mother Goose poem that refers to the final image.
